De Proefwerk Paradox waarover ik schreef geef ik hier in de originele vorm. Misschien is dat voor mijn kleinkinderen in Toronto ook gemakkelijker te lezen?
A prisoner is sentenced to death. The judge tells him that he will be hanged next week at 9.00 a.m. Then he tells him that the exact day of the execution will come as a surprise. The prisoner reasons as follows: "I cannot be executed on Friday, because in that case on Thursday evening I would know it would be on Friday, and it would not be a surprise. But by the same reason the execution cannot take place on Thursday, because in that case I would know on Wednesday." Step by step he comes to the conclusion that the execution cannot take place at all. To his great surprise he is executed on Tuesday morning.
Waarom paradoxen? Omdat dè arts van Hartfalenpoli in Deventer (Pieta Bruggink), waar ik zeer op gesteld ben, binnen afzienbare tijd gaat promoveren. Zij heeft me beloofd dat ik tijdig haar proefschrift krijg om een moeilijke (publieks)vraag te kunnen stellen. Die vraag heb ik al precies in mijn hoofd en het is een paradox, vandaar. Er zijn prachtige paradoxen in de wis- en natuurkunde, ook heel recente, waar ik graag nog over wil schrijven. Een volgende keer maar.
